WAN Optimisation

What is WAN optimisation?

We don’t want to confuse or bore you with jargon, so we’ll try to keep this as simple as we can. First of all, WAN stands for Wide Area Networks. Does your company transfer data across wide areas? Perhaps from branch to branch or from data centre to data centre? Let’s say that you have a branch in one location, a branch in another and a server located somewhere in between.

The speed and reliability of your overall connection is reliant on connection speeds and reliability at all points along the chain. We’d love to tell you that these would be entirely consistent and achieve optimal efficiency for the needs of your organisation…but you already know that’s not the case, don’t you?

WAN optimisation uses various techniques to identify and overcome the little kinks at each of your business’ connection points that are preventing you from achieving the smoothest, fastest and most efficient data transfer possible.

Why should your company consider WAN optimisation?

As a company or organisation, value for money is always key to your thinking isn’t it? Both in the services you receive and in the services that you’re able to supply to your clients. By wasting money that you don’t need to, your ability to both receive and provide value for money is diminished. Let’s say that you’re unhappy with the speed and reliability of the data transfer that you’re experiencing. Do you just go ahead and look to pay for an upgrade? Or do you first consider what you can do to avoid or delay that cost by optimising your current set-up?

WAN optimisation means optimisation for your whole company or organisation.

What can WAN optimisation involve?

Caching.

By utilising caching, frequently accessed files can be accessed more quickly. Only new or modified content has to be saved, so the system doesn’t have to take time retrieving an entire document

Traffic shaping.

Traffic shaping is a process by which your traffic can be prioritised, hence making more effective use of your bandwidth.

Compression.

Compressing your data means it uses less bandwidth.

Managing bandwidth.

Some applications can use more bandwidth than others so this process establishes limits on their bandwidth use so as to ensure the most efficient use of your connection.
